A Makkah taxi price preview is the price for one vehicle class to make one journey exactly as you entered it: one pickup place, one destination, any stops in order, the date and pickup time in Saudi local time, and the number of passengers and bags. It is shown in the currency you chose. On Makkah Cabs you pay that amount in full online at checkout, but payment only secures a provisional request. The journey is booked when its status reads Confirmed, which the booking team updates within 1 to 12 hours.
This guide is for the person in the family who runs the search for journeys in Makkah (Mecca), compares the options and then has to explain the number to everyone else. It covers what goes into the figure, what the quoted price includes and leaves out, why a Makkah fare estimate changes between one search and the next, how currency display and the minimum booking amount work, and what happens to the price after you pay. We do not quote fares anywhere in this article, because the only reliable figure is the one a live search returns for your details.

What a Makkah taxi price preview is built from
A Makkah taxi price preview is worked out from the details in the search form, and every one of them can move the result.
| What you enter | What it does to the preview |
|---|---|
| Pickup place | Sets the start of the route. A hotel tower, a district or a typed address can resolve to different map points. |
| Destination | Sets the end of the route. It must differ from the pickup, so a there-and-back trip is two journeys. |
| Stops (up to 8) | Adds waypoints in the order listed, which changes the route the price is calculated on. |
| Date and pickup time | Fixes when the journey runs, in Saudi local time (UTC+3). |
| Adults, children, infants | Counted separately and used in the capacity check. |
| Large bags and cabin bags | Also used in the capacity check, so luggage can remove smaller vehicles from the list. |
| Child seats or wheelchair requirement | Added in the search and then confirmed for the vehicle. |
| Display currency | Changes how the amount is shown, not the journey itself. |
The route is measured on roads, not in a straight line
Road distances in Makkah differ by direction because of one-way systems and junctions, so the obvious route is not always the one a vehicle can take. Our own live route checks show how much direction matters: from the Clock Royal Tower area to Hira Cultural District is about 13 km by road, while the return is about 11 km. Between the Clock Tower and Masjid Aisha at Al-Taneem it is about 13 km out and about 19 km back. A preview for one direction therefore tells you very little about the price of the other.
The capacity check filters before the price appears
The planner only shows vehicle classes that can carry the party and luggage you entered. Four adults with four large cases, for example, only see Premium SUV and larger. Five adults with five large cases only see seven-seat vehicles and larger. If you under-count people or bags, the preview may show a smaller, cheaper class that will not actually fit your group on the day. Our article on choosing a car or van for a Makkah outing goes through the classes one by one.
One vehicle, one journey: what the figure covers
Each result in the list is a price for the whole vehicle, not a price per person. Whether two or six people sit in a Hyundai Staria, the preview for that Staria on that journey is the same figure. Adding a passenger only changes the price if it pushes the party into a different class.
Each result is also a price for one journey. A journey starts at the pickup, passes any stops you entered in that order, and ends at the destination. It does not include:
- a return trip, which is a separate journey with its own time and its own price;
- a later journey on another day, even to the same place;
- time spent at a site while the vehicle waits for you, unless that has been agreed with the booking team in writing.
What the quoted price includes, and what sits outside it
The figure covers the transport you described, and nothing else.
| Inside the transport price | Outside the transport price |
|---|---|
| The vehicle class you selected, “or similar” | Admission tickets for museums or exhibitions |
| A driver for the journey as entered | A tour guide or religious guidance |
| The route from pickup, through any stops, to the destination | A return journey (booked separately) |
| An included waiting allowance at pickup, which varies by class | Waiting during a visit, unless agreed in writing |
| Child seats or wheelchair needs you added, once confirmed for the vehicle | Luggage storage or looking after belongings |
| The passenger and luggage count you entered | Extra passengers or bags not entered in the search |
The included waiting allowance
Every class carries an included waiting allowance at the pickup, and the allowance differs from class to class. It is not currently shown on the search results, so if waiting matters to your plan, ask the booking team to confirm the figure for your class in writing for your journey. It is there to absorb a normal delay at pickup, such as a lift queue in a hotel tower. It is not time for a visit.
Tickets are a separate purchase
Some Makkah outings end at a place with its own admission. Hira Cultural District, for example, lists attractions such as the Revelation Exhibition and the Holy Quran Museum on its official experiences page, with tickets bought through the district’s own ticketing. None of that is part of a transport preview. Our guide to Hira Cultural District by taxi explains how to keep the two confirmations side by side.
The minimum booking amount on short Makkah journeys
Each journey has a minimum booking value equivalent to £40. If the calculated fare for a journey would be lower than that, the checkout shows a separate line called “Minimum booking amount” that brings the total up to the minimum.
This matters in Makkah because many useful journeys are short. The road distance from the Clock Tower to the Hilton at Jabal Omar, for instance, is about 1.5 km.
Three practical points follow:
- The minimum applies per journey, not per outing. A trip out and a trip back are two journeys, so each is checked against the minimum on its own.
- Seeing the line is not an error. It means the journey is short, not that the planner has added a charge you did not ask for.
- Combining can sometimes make more sense. If you were going to make two short journeys in the same direction, one journey with a stop may describe the day better. Only do this if it genuinely matches what you will do, because the route is calculated on the stops you list.
Why a Makkah fare estimate changes before you pay
If the figure said one thing yesterday and another today, the two almost always came from two different searches. Here is why a Makkah fare estimate changes between one look and the next.
You changed an input without noticing
A different hotel entry, one extra child, one more suitcase or a reordered stop each makes a new search. Check every field rather than assuming it carried over.
The date or time changed
A preview is calculated for the date and pickup time you entered. If you change either, treat the new figure as a new quote. Do not assume that a price you saw for one day will apply to another.
The pickup point resolved to a different place
Large hotel complexes near the Haram can appear under more than one name, and a typed address can land on a neighbouring building. Always read the route summary before you pay. Our guide to the Makkah hotel pickup point explains how to choose a place the driver can actually reach.
The class you compared is no longer in the list
If you change the party or the luggage, a class may drop out of the results because it fails the capacity check. Comparing “the cheapest option” before and after is then comparing two different vehicles.
You switched currency
A figure in pounds and a figure in riyals are the same price shown two ways, so switching currency between looks produces numbers that do not match.
You used “Book again” on a past journey
In your account, a past journey has a “Book again at today’s price” option. It reloads the route and stops, but the price is recalculated. It is not the price you paid last time.
Currency display: what changes and what does not
The planner offers 13 display currencies, including Saudi riyals (SAR), pounds sterling (GBP), euros (EUR) and US dollars (USD). Choosing a currency changes how the amount appears on screen. It does not change the vehicle, the route or what the journey covers.
A useful piece of background: the Saudi Central Bank maintains the riyal’s peg to the US dollar at 3.75 riyals to the dollar, as it reaffirmed in its statement on exchange rate policy. In practice, that means the relationship between a riyal figure and a dollar figure is stable, while figures in pounds or euros move with ordinary exchange rates.
For comparing options, three habits help:
- Pick one currency and stay with it for the whole comparison, including screenshots you send to relatives.
- Pay in the currency you intend to pay in. Your card provider may apply its own conversion, which can differ from the display. Check with your bank if the exact amount on your statement matters.
- Remember fees follow the booking currency. The £5 rescheduling fee for an approved time change is converted into the booking currency, so on a riyal booking it appears as about SAR 25.
Full payment on Makkah Cabs, and why another site may show a deposit
On Makkah Cabs, the checkout takes full payment online. The amount you see at checkout is the amount you pay for that journey, and there is no balance to hand over in cash at the start.
Other sites in the same network work differently: Jeddah Cabs and Saudi Cab Co may take only a deposit online, with the balance paid in cash to the driver, and their checkout shows both amounts. If a relative sends a screenshot with a smaller “pay now” figure from another site, check whether it is a deposit before concluding the price is lower. The one cash payment that can arise on a Makkah Cabs booking is the rescheduling fee described below.
From preview to Confirmed: what payment actually secures
A preview is not a reservation. Nothing is held for you while you look at the list, and no vehicle is set aside because you opened a result. Online bookings also need at least 48 hours’ notice before pickup; a search inside that window returns the message “This journey must be booked at least 48 hours in advance.”
When you pay, the booking becomes a provisional request. The booking team then updates its status within 1 to 12 hours. Only when it reads Confirmed is the journey booked. Until then, tell the family “we have paid and are waiting for confirmation”, not “the car is booked”. You can follow the status in your Makkah Cabs account, which shows the status timeline, the payment, and the driver’s name once one is assigned.
If the journey cannot be supplied and no suitable alternative is accepted, you receive a full refund for the affected journey.
What happens to the price after you have paid
Once a journey is paid, the price is tied to the journey as booked. Changes work like this:
- A new pickup time. From your account you can request a new, future pickup time before the original pickup time. If the booking team approves it, a £5 rescheduling fee applies, converted into the booking currency and added to the cash paid to the driver at pickup. The team may waive it. A rejected request costs nothing.
- Anything else. Only the time can be changed online. A different pickup place, destination, number of passengers or vehicle needs the booking team, or a new booking plus a cancellation request.
- Cancelling. Bookings are subject to our cancellation terms (free cancellation with a full refund up to 48 hours before pickup; inside 48 hours the deposit element of the price is kept) if the customer cancels. If we or the transport partner cancel, or cannot supply the journey, you receive a full refund for the affected journey. The full wording is in the cancellation and refund policy.
That is the real reason to read a Makkah taxi price preview carefully before paying: afterwards, fixing a wrong destination or a missing passenger is no longer a matter of changing a field.
A worked example: the Siddiqui family compare two previews
Imran Siddiqui is planning an outing for his parents, his wife Aisha and their two children, aged nine and one, from their hotel near the Clock Tower to Hira Cultural District. He runs a search on Tuesday evening for a Saturday morning pickup. His first attempt counts only two adults, because he filled the form from an earlier search for himself and Aisha. He corrects it to four adults, one child, one infant and two cabin bags. The list shows several classes, and he screenshots the family van result in pounds to send to his brother.
On Wednesday his brother replies that he would like to join. Imran runs the search again with five adults. Some of the smaller classes have dropped out of the list, as expected, but the family van is still offered because the party still fits it. He compares that result with his screenshot rather than with the cheapest line on the new list. He also notices the currency has defaulted back to riyals, so the number looks completely different until he switches to pounds.
Then he adds the return. Because the pickup and destination must differ, he searches again from Hira Cultural District back to the hotel, choosing a pickup time that leaves room for the museum visit the family has already bought tickets for. This second journey has its own preview, and he expects it to differ from the first.
Saturday is more than 48 hours away, so both journeys can be booked online. He pays for both, tells the family group “paid, waiting for confirmation”, and only forwards the details once both journeys read Confirmed.
Imran avoided comparing a riyal figure with a pound figure, assuming the return was included, and telling his parents the car was booked while it was provisional.
Comparing previews fairly
When two figures differ, work through this table before deciding one is better value.
| If the two previews differ, check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Same pickup and destination, spelled the same way | A different map point is a different route |
| Same stops, in the same order | Stop order changes the route |
| Same date and pickup time | Each preview is for its own date and time |
| Same passengers and bags | Different counts can change the classes shown |
| Same vehicle class | A cheaper class may not fit your party |
| Same currency | Different currencies show different numbers for the same price |
| Same payment structure | A deposit is not the full price |
| Same scope | A one-way figure is not comparable with a there-and-back total |
Our guide to the multi-stop Makkah visit by taxi shows how stop order shapes the route.
Sharing the preview with the family
Once you have the right result, the basket can email a secure review link so another person can check the journey before one person pays. This is better than a screenshot because it shows the full details, not just the headline figure.
Use accurate words: “the family van for Saturday at 9:00 from our hotel to Hira Cultural District, one way, not yet confirmed” tells relatives what the Makkah taxi price preview actually covers. If someone in the family is handling payment from home, our note on asking the hotel reception to help with a booked pickup covers the handover on the day.
Checklist before you pay for a Makkah journey
- Read the pickup and destination in the route summary, not just the search box.
- Confirm every stop is listed, in the order you will actually travel.
- Check the date and the pickup time in Saudi local time.
- Recount adults, children, infants, large bags and cabin bags.
- Add any child seat or wheelchair requirement in the search.
- Choose one display currency and keep it for all comparisons.
- Look for a “Minimum booking amount” line and understand why it appears.
- Make sure the return, if you need one, is booked as its own journey.
- Remember tickets, guides and waiting during a visit are not in the price.
- Check the pickup is at least 48 hours away.
- Send the review link to anyone who needs to agree before you pay.
- After paying, wait for Confirmed before telling the family it is booked.
When your details are right, the preview becomes a figure you can trust for exactly the journey you described. To run a live search with your own route, party and date, open the Makkah Cabs planner and check each field before you pay.
