A Jeddah day trip from Makkah works best as two separate journeys booked in advance: one from your Makkah hotel to a named place in Jeddah, such as Historic Jeddah (Al-Balad) or a point on the Corniche, and one back to your hotel at a time you have agreed before you leave. The drive is long enough that the day needs a plan, so choose one or two places, avoid the hottest hours if you can, and set the return for the evening rather than leaving it open.
This guide is for pilgrims and their families who are based in Makkah (Mecca) for Umrah and want a day or an evening in Jeddah (sometimes written Jiddah) before they go home. It is not about the airport run or business travel. It covers whether a Makkah to Jeddah and back in a day plan suits your group, how to book both legs, what Al-Balad and the Corniche involve, how to time the day around prayer and heat, the rules and seasons worth checking before you leave Makkah, and what happens if plans change. For religious questions, such as anything connected with ihram or a further Umrah after your return, speak to a qualified scholar and follow the official Nusuk guidance.

Is a Jeddah day trip from Makkah right for your group?
Most families who come for Umrah plan their days around the Grand Mosque. A day away is a real trade: fewer prayers in the Haram, a long road journey each way and a tiring day for older relatives. For some groups it is still worth it, particularly on a longer stay, or when younger members want to see the old city their grandparents talked about.
It tends to suit:
- families on a stay of a week or more, who have already completed their Umrah;
- groups with a shared interest in Jeddah’s history, markets or seafront;
- relatives visiting someone who lives in Jeddah;
- anyone who will not pass through Jeddah city on the way home.
It tends not to suit:
- a short stay where every day in Makkah counts;
- a group with a relative who tires quickly in heat or in a car;
- the days just before a departure, when bags, check-out and the airport need attention.
If you are unsure, a shorter evening visit to one place is a fair test. You can always plan a longer day on a future trip.
How far is Jeddah from Makkah?
We give distances only from our own live route checks, and we do not quote journey times because they vary too much with the day, the season and the traffic.
On our live checks, the road distance from Hilton Jabal Omar in Makkah to Jeddah Airport was about 91 km, and from Jeddah Airport to central Makkah about 94 to 97 km. Your destination in Jeddah city will be a different distance again. Check the distance shown in the planner’s route summary for your own hotel and destination before you pay.
For comparison, the Jeddah Hilton to Jeddah Airport measured about 14 km on our checks, which gives a sense of how much of the day is spent inside Jeddah itself when you move between places there.
Makkah to Jeddah and back in a day: how the booking works
The Makkah Cabs planner books journeys, not days. Each journey has one pickup place, one destination, a date and a pickup time in Saudi local time (UTC+3), the passengers and the bags. The pickup and destination must differ, so a Makkah to Jeddah and back in a day plan is at least two journeys, each booked with its own time.
The outward journey
From your Makkah hotel to your first place in Jeddah. Type the hotel’s full name, not a nearby landmark, and type the Jeddah destination as precisely as you can. Check the route summary to make sure the planner has found the right place.
You can add up to 8 stops in journey order, but a stop is a point on the way, not a place where the car waits for you. If you want time at a place, make it the destination of a journey.
The return journey
From your last place in Jeddah back to your Makkah hotel, at a time you choose in advance. This is the leg families most often leave vague, and it is the one that matters most. Our guide to agreeing the return pickup before you set out explains why it deserves the same care as the outward trip.
A middle journey, if you visit two places
If you want both Al-Balad and the Corniche, the simplest plan is three journeys: hotel to Al-Balad, Al-Balad to your chosen Corniche point, and the Corniche back to Makkah. Each needs its own time. The alternative is two journeys and a local arrangement between the two places, which you would make yourself on the day.
Can the car wait all day?
Not as something you can select. The free waiting allowance covers getting everyone into the car at the booked pickup time, not a visit. If you want the same driver to stay with you, ask the booking team, and only rely on it once it is agreed in writing. Our guide to whether a taxi can wait during a visit explains the difference between waiting and two journeys.
Visiting Jeddah during Umrah: where families usually go
Visiting Jeddah during Umrah is usually about one of two places: the old city, or the sea.
Historic Jeddah (Al-Balad)
UNESCO lists Historic Jeddah, the Gate to Makkah as a World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2014. Its description explains why pilgrims find it meaningful: from the 7th century Jeddah was a major port channelling goods to Makkah, and it became the gateway for Muslim pilgrims arriving by sea. UNESCO notes the tower houses with large wooden roshan screens, mosques that still serve their community, and souks running from the sea towards Makkah Gate.
Saudipedia’s entry on Historic Jeddah adds landmarks worth naming in a booking: Bab Makkah, the eastern gate in front of Souq al-Badu; Bait Nassif, where King Abdulaziz lived for about ten years from 1925; the al-Shafi’i Mosque; and al-Nada Market. Visit Saudi describes Al-Balad as an area of traditional souqs, heritage houses, museums and cafés.
For transport, Al-Balad is an area you walk, not a single door. Pick one named landmark as your drop-off and, ideally, the same or another named landmark for your pickup. That gives the driver and your family the same reference point. Check opening arrangements for any house or museum you want to enter with the official operator before you go; we have not found an official page setting out current hours.
The Corniche
Saudipedia’s entry on Jeddah city describes a Corniche waterfront of 4,500 metres with green areas and swimming beaches, and names King Fahd’s Fountain on the Red Sea coast as the tallest fountain of its kind in the world. Visit Saudi describes the Corniche as a coastal destination for Red Sea views, sunset walks, public art and parks.
The Corniche is long, so “the Corniche” is not enough as a destination. Choose a named point and use the same point for the return pickup, or a clearly named alternative.
Relatives in Jeddah
If you are visiting family, their home address is the destination. Ask them for a map pin and the building name, and ask one of them to meet the car on your return pickup.
Two ways to fit Jeddah into a Makkah stay
| Plan | How it is booked | Suits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day or evening trip from Makkah | Two or three journeys, all starting or ending at your Makkah hotel | Longer stays; groups who want to return to Makkah the same night | A long return late in the day; an open-ended return |
| Visit on the way to the airport | One journey from Makkah to the airport, with Jeddah as a stop, or a journey to Jeddah and a separate journey to the airport | Groups flying from Jeddah with time before check-in | Suitcases in the car all day; a stop is not waiting time; the flight time is fixed |
For most pilgrims the day trip is the calmer choice, because the suitcases stay in the hotel and nothing depends on a flight. The second plan is possible, but only with a generous margin and a clear view of where the luggage will be.
Timing a Jeddah day trip around prayer and heat
We do not give journey times, so build the day from your own fixed points.
Start with the return. Decide what time you want to be back at your hotel, perhaps for a particular prayer or for an early night before a busy day. The return pickup time comes from that decision, with a sensible margin for traffic.
Then fix the outward leg. Many families leave Makkah after a morning prayer and rest, and aim to reach Jeddah in the later afternoon, when walking outside is more comfortable in the hotter months. Evening is a popular time on the Corniche. This is a planning suggestion, not a rule.
Leave space for prayer. Al-Balad has historic mosques that still serve their community. Build prayer times into the plan in whichever way your family prefers, rather than hoping they will fit around the car.
Keep one plan for everyone. A single return time and a single meeting place avoid most of the stress at the end of the day. Our guide to setting one group return deadline shows how to agree it before anyone leaves the car.
Rules and seasons to check before you leave Makkah
Two practical checks come before the booking.
Your visa and your plans. Check the conditions of your own visa for travel within the Kingdom on the official Nusuk platform or with the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. We cannot advise on visa conditions.
The Hajj season. Entry to Makkah is controlled around the Hajj season. In April 2026 the Saudi Press Agency reported that residents need a permit to enter Makkah unless they hold a Makkah resident ID, a Hajj permit or a permit to work in the Holy Sites. If your stay falls anywhere near that season, confirm the current arrangements for your own status before you leave Makkah, because the day trip only works if you can return. For most Umrah stays outside that period this will not apply, but it is worth checking rather than assuming.
Religious questions. If you plan to perform another Umrah after returning from Jeddah, the questions about ihram and where to enter it are for a qualified scholar and the official Nusuk guidance, not for us or your driver.
Choosing the vehicle and packing for the day
The planner only shows vehicle classes that pass the capacity check for your party and bags. For a Jeddah day trip from Makkah, you are carrying day bags rather than suitcases, so the passenger count usually decides the class. If you are taking a pushchair or a folding wheelchair, enter it so the check includes it. Our guide to a stroller and day bags on a Makkah outing explains how to count them, and our guide to choosing a car or van for a Makkah outing compares the classes.
Useful things to carry: water, a hat or umbrella for shade, comfortable shoes for Al-Balad’s lanes, a charged phone for each adult, and the Makkah hotel’s name and address in Arabic for the return.
Waiting at the return pickup
Free waiting counts from the booked pickup time. For a return from Jeddah this matters, because a family walking back from the souks or the seafront can easily be a few minutes late.
| Vehicle class | Free waiting | After that |
|---|---|---|
| Economy | 15 minutes | SAR 1.50 per minute |
| Business & Executive, VIP van (Staria), family van (H1) | 30 minutes | SAR 2.00 per minute |
| Minibus (Hiace or Coaster) and Coach | 30 minutes | SAR 2.50 per minute |
| Premium SUV (Tahoe or Yukon) | 45 minutes | SAR 2.50 per minute |
| Luxury (S-Class) | 60 minutes | SAR 4.00 per minute |
If you expect to need longer, add extra waiting at checkout in 15-minute steps: 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 or 120 minutes. It is priced at the class’s per-minute rate and added to the booking. We never promise waiting beyond what was booked, so it is better to set a realistic pickup time than to rely on extra minutes.
Worked example: an afternoon in Al-Balad and an evening by the sea
Tariq and Amina are in Makkah for ten days with their teenage son Zayd and Amina’s mother, Halima. They completed their Umrah on the first day, and on the sixth day they want to see Jeddah before flying home.
The decision. Halima tires in the heat, so they choose an afternoon and evening rather than a full day, and two places rather than three.
The bookings. Tariq books three journeys four days ahead, comfortably more than the 48 hours’ notice required:
- Their Makkah hotel to Bab Makkah in Al-Balad, in the early afternoon.
- Bab Makkah to a named point on the Corniche, in the early evening.
- The same Corniche point back to their Makkah hotel, at a time that brings them back well before Halima usually sleeps.
He books an Economy car for each journey: four people and day bags pass the capacity check. For the final return he adds 15 minutes’ extra waiting at checkout, because Halima walks slowly on sand and paving.
Before paying. Tariq checks each route summary, confirms the Corniche point is the one he meant, and writes the same meeting point in the notes of journeys 2 and 3. He pays in full online. Each booking shows as provisional, then changes to Confirmed within the 1 to 12 hours the booking team takes to update it.
On the day. Zayd sends a live location to the driver when they reach each meeting point. In Al-Balad they keep to a leave-by time agreed in advance, so they reach the second pickup on time.
When plans change after booking
Only the pickup time can be changed online. On a paid booking, use “Request a new pickup time” in your account before the current pickup time. An approved change carries a £5 rescheduling fee, converted into your booking currency and added to the cash paid to the driver at pickup; a rejected request costs nothing.
The places, the number of passengers and the vehicle cannot be changed online. They need the booking team, or a new booking plus a cancellation request. Bookings are subject to our cancellation terms (free cancellation with a full refund up to 48 hours before pickup; inside 48 hours the deposit element of the price is kept) if you cancel. If we or our transport partner cancel, or cannot supply the journey, you receive a full refund for the affected journey. The Makkah Cabs cancellation and refund policy has the detail. Each journey also has a minimum booking value equivalent to £40.
If a relative decides not to come, tell the booking team, because the number of passengers cannot be changed online, and a smaller vehicle would be a new booking.
