If a Makkah ziyarah site is closed, restricted or simply too busy when you want to go, the booking can usually still do useful work, as long as you decided on a plan B before you paid. A Makkah ziyarah site closed for the day, a museum that opens later than expected or a queue that makes the visit impractical does not cancel the car. What it changes is how you use the journeys you have booked. The time of a paid journey can be changed through a request in your account. The pickup place, the destination, the passenger count and the vehicle cannot be changed online, so the most reliable plan B is one that uses the same drop-off area or the same return journey.
This guide is for families and small groups staying in Makkah (Mecca) hotels who are planning a visit, or ziyarah, to places such as Hira Cultural District, Masjid Aisha or Jabal Thawr, and who want the day to hold together if one stop falls through. It explains why sites become unavailable, what a Makkah Cabs booking does and does not cover, how to prepare an alternative before booking, what you can change on the day, and when a new booking is the only answer. It ends with a worked example and a checklist. It deals with transport and planning only. Makkah ziyarah site closed? Five common causes
When a Makkah ziyarah site is closed or unusable, the cause is usually one of five. Knowing which one you face tells you which plan B makes sense.
Opening hours that differ within one site. A place can be open while the part you want to see is not. The official Hira Cultural District website lists the district and the path to the Cave of Hira as open 24 hours, while the Revelation Exhibition and the Holy Quran Museum keep set hours: Saturday to Wednesday 07:30 to 23:30, Thursday 07:30 to 01:00 and Friday 15:30 to 01:00, when we checked in September 2026. A family arriving at 11:00 on a Friday would find the district open and the exhibition closed. Always check the official list of Hira experiences and hours for the day you plan, not a general summary.
Attractions that are announced but not yet open. The same official page marks the Saudi Coffee Museum and the Cultural Library as “Soon”. Older descriptions of a site can list features that are planned rather than operating. Plan around what the official source shows as open when you book.
Seasonal access rules. Entry to Makkah itself is controlled around the Hajj season, and the rules change each year (see the section on seasonal access below).
Crowds. A site can be open and still impractical when many groups arrive at once.
Road and traffic management. Vehicle access around busy sites is managed on the day. Makkah Cabs does not promise where a car may stop.
What your booking covers when a ziyarah stop is not available
A Makkah Cabs journey is built from a small set of facts: one pickup place, one destination, a pickup date and time in Saudi local time (UTC+3), the passengers (adults, children and infants) and their bags. You can add up to eight stops in journey order. That is what the driver has been asked to deliver.
Three consequences matter when a site is unavailable:
- The transport and the visit are separate arrangements. If you hold a ticket for an exhibition or museum, that booking sits with the attraction. Your driver cannot open a closed door, change an entry slot or refund a ticket. A changed car plan does not change your ticket, and a changed ticket does not change your car.
- A there-and-back outing is two journeys. The planner requires the pickup and the destination to be different, so the outward trip and the return are booked separately, each with its own time. This is useful in a plan B, because you can adjust the return time without touching the outward journey.

So a different destination is a different journey. The driver cannot rewrite the booking at the kerb.
Checks that prevent most closed-site surprises
Most plan B situations can be avoided with ten minutes of checking before you book. Online bookings need at least 48 hours’ notice before pickup, so do these checks at least two days ahead, and again on the evening before.
- Read the official source for the day and time you plan. For Hira Cultural District that is the district’s own website. Nusuk also lists more than 140 places in Makkah and Madinah, including historical landmarks and cultural sites.
- Separate “open” from “open for what you want”. Check the hours for the specific exhibition, museum or view you want.
- Check whether entry needs a booking. On the Hira district site, each experience has its own “Book now” link. If you need an entry time, book it first and then book the car around it.
- Note the season. Around Hajj, entry to Makkah is restricted.
- Decide what the outing is for. If the purpose is one exhibition, a closure ends the purpose. If the purpose is a family morning out together, a closure only changes the content.

Building a plan B for a Makkah visit before you pay
A good plan B for a Makkah visit has three properties. It serves the same purpose as the original, it fits the journeys you have already booked, and everyone in the group has agreed it in advance.
The simplest way to find one is to ask a single question for each planned site: if this is unavailable, what would we do with the same car and the same hour? The table below shows common situations.

The plans B that work best keep the same destination area and change only what you do there, or when you come back. A completely different destination turns into a new booking.
Choose an alternative with the same purpose
If the purpose is the exhibition and museum at Hira, a different day may be better than a different place. If the purpose is time together outside the hotel, the district itself may be enough. The official site describes a Hira Park with shaded seating, so check that it is open on your date.
Keep the alternative close to the original
The live route checks in our booking system show why distance matters. From the Clock Tower area, Hira Cultural District is about 13 km by road and Masjid Aisha is also about 13 km, but they are in different directions, and the return from Masjid Aisha measured about 19 km. Swapping one for the other is not a small change. It is a different journey with its own route.
Ziyarah stop not available on the day: what can change
If you are already out when you find a ziyarah stop not available, your options depend on which journey is affected.
Changing the time of a journey
For a paid booking, before its pickup time, your account offers “Request a new pickup time”. You choose a future time and can add a short note. The status message reads: “Request received. It remains pending until the booking team approves it.” Only one open time request is allowed per booking.
An approved new pickup time carries a £5 rescheduling fee, converted into your booking currency (about SAR 25), which is added to the cash you pay the driver at pickup. The booking team may waive it. A request that is rejected costs nothing. This is the most useful tool in a plan B, because most alternatives mean coming back earlier or later rather than going somewhere else. Until the request is approved, the original time stands. If the change is urgent, contact the booking team as well.
What cannot be changed online
The pickup place, the destination, the number of passengers and the vehicle cannot be changed online. That needs the booking team, or a new booking plus a cancellation request. On the day, this means the driver of your return journey will come to the pickup place in the booking. If your plan B leaves you somewhere else, contact the booking team rather than asking the driver to find you.
If the site is closed when you arrive
When you find a Makkah ziyarah site closed on arrival, stay together, confirm what the closure covers and choose between the prepared alternatives. A nearby alternative may need nothing more than a new return time. To go straight back, request an earlier return time.
If it is open but very busy
Consider splitting the group: those happy to wait go ahead, the others rest in a shaded spot nearby. Agree one meeting time and place before anyone moves. When the destination itself has to change
Sometimes the only good plan B is a different place altogether. That is a new journey, and three rules apply.
The 48-hour rule. Online bookings need at least 48 hours’ notice before pickup. A search inside that window returns “This journey must be booked at least 48 hours in advance.” So a new destination for today or tomorrow cannot be booked through the planner. If it is urgent, contact the booking team and ask whether it can be arranged. Do not assume it can.
The minimum booking value. Each journey has a minimum booking value equivalent to £40. A short hop to a nearby alternative may show a “Minimum booking amount” line if its fare would otherwise be lower.
Cancellation terms. Bookings are subject to our cancellation terms (free cancellation with a full refund up to 48 hours before pickup; inside 48 hours the deposit element of the price is kept) if the customer cancels. If you replace a journey you no longer need with a new one, the cancelled journey remains subject to our cancellation terms (free cancellation with a full refund up to 48 hours before pickup; inside 48 hours the deposit element of the price is kept). So a time change is the first choice and a new destination the last resort, which is why a plan B for a Makkah visit belongs in the planning, not the day itself.
Seasonal access: when Makkah itself is restricted
Some unavailability has nothing to do with a site’s own hours. In the Hajj season, the Saudi authorities restrict entry to Makkah. For Hajj 1447, the Ministry of Interior’s arrangements, reported by the Saudi Press Agency, required residents to obtain official permits to enter Makkah from 13 April 2026, stated that from 18 April 2026 holders of all visa types would not be allowed to enter or remain in Makkah except those holding a Hajj visa, and suspended the issue of Umrah permits through Nusuk from 18 April to 31 May 2026. The dates move every year with the Hijri calendar, so check the current announcement if your trip is near the Hajj season. No transport booking overrides an entry restriction.
Crowds and heat: plan B is often a different hour
When the problem is a crowd, the best alternative is often a different time rather than a different place. The Hira exhibition hours run into the evening, so an evening visit is one option. If your plan B means more time outdoors, build in shade and water for older relatives and children. We do not publish crowd predictions or journey times, because both vary widely.
A worked example: the Rahman family’s Friday at Hira
Farida Rahman is organising an outing for her parents, her brother Imran and his two teenage children, all staying near the Clock Tower. The plan is the Revelation Exhibition at Hira Cultural District on Friday morning.
Before booking. On Monday, Farida checks the official Hira site and sees that on Fridays the exhibition opens at 15:30. Her parents prefer to rest on Friday afternoon, so she moves the visit to Thursday, still more than 48 hours away. She books two journeys: Clock Tower to Hira Cultural District at 09:00, and Hira Cultural District back to the Clock Tower at 12:00, in a vehicle that fits six people.
Her plan B. She writes one line for the family group chat: “If the exhibition is too busy, we stay in the district, rest in the shade and keep the 12:00 pickup. If Dad is tired, we ask to bring the return forward.” She books the exhibition tickets separately, through the official site.
On the day. The exhibition is busy. Imran and the teenagers join the queue. Farida and her parents sit in the shade. By 10:45 her father is tired, so Farida requests a return time of 11:30 in her account. The booking team approves it, and the £5 rescheduling fee, about SAR 25, is added to the cash paid to the driver. Imran and the children agree to meet at the same point at 11:20, and Farida keeps her phone on so that she can share a live location if the pickup point needs agreeing.
The destination never changed, so nothing needed a new booking. The plan B worked because it was chosen in advance.
Keeping everyone on the same version of the plan
Plans B fail more often through confusion than closure. To prevent that:
- Name one coordinator. One person makes requests in the account and speaks to the booking team.
- Write the plan B down before the day. One short message is enough: the main plan, the alternative and the trigger for switching.
- Mark which version applies. When a request is approved, post the new time and meeting point in one message and say that it replaces the old one.
- Keep booking notes practical. Notes can describe entrances and practical needs, not alternative destinations the driver has not been booked to reach.

- Check the official source for the exact day and time, including separate hours for exhibitions or museums inside a site.
- Book any attraction tickets first, and the car around them.
- Check whether the date falls near the Hajj season and read the current official announcement if it does.
- Choose one plan B that uses the same destination area or only a different return time.
- Book at least 48 hours ahead, as an outward journey and a separate return.
- Wait for the status to read Confirmed before telling the group the plan is settled.
- Share the main plan, the plan B and the switching point with everyone in one message.
